For most of my workday I have earphones on, that's a lot of hours to fill with podcasts. So I've started listening to podfic. Today's was awesome. A gen crossover adventure featuring Firefly and Doctor who. I totally recommend it. Check it out.

I haven't posted a real entry since May 2, 2011. WOW. I thought it was at least this summer. Nothing much has happened since then. I have a 6 month contract of work that I'm 2 months into, which is great. I'm going to be a godmother to my cousin's second child, which I'm very excited about, and today I'm going to bake up a storm so I can make some gift baskets for friends and family. Here's hoping the three new recipes (gingerbread biscotti from joy of baking and Martha Stewart's fudge recipe and chocolate popcorn recipe) work out.

Anyone else watching season two of Who do you think you are USA? Last week's premiere had clips of upcoming episodes, including Kim Catrrall. THIS episode, in fact. Though I'm sure the USA version will be shorter, with parts repeated more, and an American accented narrator. CAN'T WAIT! ha.

I'll probably watch it anyway, just to see the difference, and cause I love the show.

Canon/Cannon. Oh god, I've seen this misspelt so often I don't know which is which anymore!

Canon is the one that means the fan fiction is not an AU, right? And cannon is something you shoot from your pirate ship. A hoy!

Went and saw Kevin Smith this afternoon. Three hours! Wow. Way too much sitting with people way too close to me. But Kevin! Smith! He was hilarious, only 1 1/2 instances of oh god shut up behaviour during question time.

Interesting thing he mentioned. He's writing this hockey movie, and in his mind, and on the script, he has Alan Rickman as the narrator of the film. Hasn't asked him yet, but that's who he wants. And I say, yes. Rickman would be perfect to narrate your movie. I mean. Good god.

I went to Ottawa yesterday, about a 2 1/2 hour drive. Just for lunch and some shopping. As I'm leaving the city I see this billboard for something Harry Potter related, but it flips and then the light turned green.

Got home and finally looked it up tonight.

A question about toast.

Went for breakfast this morning, waitress asked if we wanted white or brown bread, as per usual. A conversation later about what different areas call brown bread, and you've got this poll. So, do the wait-staff in your area call it brown, whole wheat, or something else?

Since I can't make polls via LJ this was made with acepolls, first time using it so hopefully it works.

Which do they say:

I've downloaded and watched online so much tv in the last three days that I'm already almost half way through my internet usage with 27 days to go. That is not good. But I finally found a reliable proxy to watch BBC's iplayer, and they had some really good shows, that I may have watched more than once each. Check out their new Maps documentary, the first episode was awesome.

Also, has anyone been watching Dancing with the Stars this season? Are they showing more arguments during the practises than season's past? It really annoying, and I'm starting to hate most of them who are fighting, and don't even want to watch them dance after the explosive arguments. Get back to the dancing and the sparkles dwts, this is not Big Brother.

When my livejournal renewal came up in January I decided to skip it so I've had a free account since then. I already had a bunch of moodthemes uploaded, and all my css edits still work. That plus the awesome and various adblocks I don't really notice the difference except for my cut in icons.

BUT, sometimes my friends page doesn't fully load. My header and navigation bar on the left is there, but none of the entries appear. It usually takes one or two refreshes to appear.

So this is what I'm wondering, is it because I'm a free account user now so when there is a lot of traffic I get the slow servers, or is this happening to any paid users out there? Anyone heard anything about it?

• Watching the Olympics, it is fun. Love the online streaming video, especially since I can pause and rewind. Nifty.

• I phoned up Bell to let them know I wasn't renewing when my internet contract comes up in April. They insisted I was cancelling. Noooo. I just was not renewing. See, difference. Same outcome, but cancelling seems like I'm breaching my contract or backing out of something I promised to do. Not renewing is simply, "it's been good, I'm leaving now, thanks."

• Monday. Kid C. who we took care of from ages 1-1/2 to 13 years is coming for a week long visit. Now an oldie at 18 years old. Craziness how time flies and these kids grow up.

• Jack Whitehall is on the latest Argumental I downloaded, yay. Hopefully it's a good episode.

I'm putting together the family tree, which is relatively easy for my mother's side, with not only ancestry.ca but also my grandmother's and great-aunt's notes on the family, including family trees. It can really get away from you though, going off to different branches and seeing where they lead. Like the branch that I traced back to 1084. It's freaky, neat, but freaky. Now I'm taking a look at more recent history and seeing if I can get a sense of who these people were. Beyond baby making machines that is. God. The women in my family spent most of their adult lives pregnant.

Happy New Year! 2009 had it's ups and downs, but overall it was good. Hopefully this coming year will be even better, for everyone.

I've got the family over today, not as much as for Christmas, which is better, since there is only so many chairs that can fit around the table. :) Though we did fit 14 then.

Christmas was good as well, flannel sheets, pyjamas and Christmas houses, I got a good bunch of gifts. And now I guess I have to get back to the family, though I just want to sleep.

Christmas time always means that there will be all different types of cheese in the fridge, which during the rest of the year I'm too cheap to buy, plus ham, salami, pickles and stuff. Along with all sorts of crackers and bread in the cupboard. Which means some hummus needs to be made, yay. This is my father's awesome recipe.

Hummus
Makes a lot.

1 medium sized potato
1 can garbanzo beans (796ml), drained and liquid reserved
1 cup tahini
6 cloves garlic
1 cup lemon juice
1-1/4 cup olive oil
3/4 tsp salt
3/4 tsp pepper
1/2 cup parsley, chopped, optional

Boil the potato with the skin until tender, let it cool then peel it, you can do this the night before.

With a hand blender, blend together the garlic cloves, tahini and 1/2 cup of the reserved bean liquid, if it's very thick you can add some more of the liquid.

If you have a Kitchen Aid mixer, or something similar that has a grinder attachment, use that to cut the garbanzo beans and potato. Alternately, you can use a ricer.

Add together all the ingredients, except parsley, and mix at low speed with the flat beater attachment for, at a minimum, 10 minutes.

Mix in parsley, which is more for decoration then anything else. Enjoy.

Went to see the Olympic torch run happening near by, it was fun, thankfully it wasn't snowing like yesterday, but it was windy. But with all those people and mobile things around it wasn't too bad. Josee Chouinard was our runner, it happen so quick, she needed to walk instead. :) Thankfully I didn't try to take a picture of that and filmed it instead, though here are two pictures that I took once she got the stage.

I didn't know my mother was making pork and beans, but I soon found out, cause oh my god, it smelled delicious. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water. This was the first time she made this dish and it turned out fantastic, who needs to go to the sugar shack for breakfast when you've got this? It's definitely a keeper.

1 pound white beans
1/2 cup molasses
1/2 cup maple syrup
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 medium size red onion, diced
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon savory
1/2 pound salted pork
hot water

Rince and soak the beans, (water to cover) all night. Next day, replace the water then bring slowly to boiling, reduce the heat and simmer for 30 - 45 minutes.

Turn on slow cooker so that it warms up, this will help in mixing the ingredients. Add in and mix together molasses, maple syrup, brown sugar, diced onion, dry mustard, salt and savory. Mix in beans with water to the slow cooker and add the salted pork.

Set slower cooker to cook for 7 hours.

Enjoy!

I tried taking a picture of it, but it was so hard to convey just how awesome it was. )

Wow, you know what I just got in the mail? Sunlight Green laundry detergent. A full bottle that'll do 32 loads of laundry. I wonder where I signed up for that, maybe brandsampler.ca? It was damaged a bit, and the note from Canada Post says it was part of a mail article found without contents, so I wonder if there was more stuff that was suppose to come with it. Either way, cool freebie.

Happy Thanksgiving! I wish I was having turkey as well. And stuffing, gravy, even mash potatoes, which I don't normally like, but it's good during Thanksgiving. Oh, and pumpkin pie and cranberry sauce, the latter of which I totally forgot about during our Thanksgiving until the next day. :( Christmas though, won't forget then, I hope. So yes, anyway, have a great holiday!
